Merv Hughes - a fearsome sight for any batsman |
Big Merv Hughes, one of the great characters of world cricket in the 1980s and early 1990s, will be the guest speaker at the Foundation's biennial dinner on Wednesday 3rd October.
A stout-hearted performer on the field, Merv's ready wit has him placed as one of Australasia's most sought-after speakers. This will be a terrific night of entertainment.
Pivotal to the Australians 4-1 Ashes victory in 1993, Merv ended his career with 212 test wickets and more than 1,000 runs. Known as Fruit Fly (Australia's biggest pest), he had an army of fans around the globe and he saved perhaps his best performances for the most desperate of times.
A backdrop of adoring fans as Big Merv warms up for another attack on the opposition |
During the 1991 Adelaide test against Pakistan, Javed Miandad called Merv a 'fat bus conductor'. A few balls later, Merv dismissed Miandad and yelled 'tickets please' as he ran past the departing batsman. Merv Hughes mixed jest with aggression during his 53-test career and we're looking forward to hosting him.
The dinner is open to all parties and will be held in the Dunedin Convention Centre, Melville Street, Dunedin.
Tickets are priced at $80 per head with a cash bar to operate post-dinner.
Bookings can be made now through the Foundation office - 03/4778977 or 027/4370335 or by email on info@obhsfoundation.co.nz
