Perfect overhead conditions and a Littlebourne ground in ideal order greeted the players in the annual First XV clash.
From then on though, it was downhill for Otago Boys'.
They trailed 10-3 at the break and ended up on the wrong side of a 27-3 scoreline, Southland Boys' scoring four unanswered tries as their forwards dominated the set pieces and were free to scavenge in the loose.
Better news for the Second XV, which won its match 17-8 with the game played at the Kensington Oval.
