Otago Boys’ pupils will be to the fore on Dunedin’s streets today collecting for CanTeen, the organisation which supports young people living with cancer.
Good cause . . . school pupils who will be out collecting for CanTeen today include (from left) Brooke Garner (13), Rebecca Henderson (13), of Otago Girls' High School, Charlie Mornin (15) and Jamie Russell (14), of Otago Boys' High School. |
About 20 Dunedin teenagers affected by the death of a school mate from a rare form of cancer are volunteering their time. Sam Hall (17), a member of CanTeen with younger sister Renee, died last month from synovial sarcoma, a rare form of cancer of the extra-skeletal tissue.
Before her death, she spoke to pupils at Otago Boys’ High School about her battle with cancer and about living life to the full, and was widely known and respected at her own school, Otago Girls’ High School.
Warwick Kain was so taken by Sam’s story that he approached CanTeen to offer his help to raise money during its annual bandana challenge from October 17-31. A number of his mates from Otago Boys’ will join him and pupils from Otago Girls’ collecting in the appeal day today.
It was their way of remembering Sam and helping out other teenagers affected by cancer.
