Otago Daily Times photographer Craig Baxter (1982-86) has won national honours for his dramatic image of Brighton surf life-saver Seth McPhee diving into kelp at Second Beach during a training day last October.
The photograph was judged best photograph at Surf Life-saving New Zealand’s national media awards in Wellington on Saturday night.
The judges called it an outstanding photograph, saying it highlighted the dangerous situations surf life-savers put themselves into to help others.
Craig, a member of the Otago Daily Times illustrations department for 10 years, said it was ‘‘very exciting’’ to win the competition as it was one most newspaper photographers from around the country contested.
