The school’s representatives in the Willows under 17 cricket team’s tour of India – Tom Rutherford and Ciaran McMeeken – have made telling contributions in the early stages of the Spirit of Development tournament in Chandigarh.
After sampling the delights of Dubai where the boys were ferried around the city in a fleet of Mercedes Benz luxury vehicles, it’s been steam trains and put-puts in India.
Some of the players have suffered from ‘Delhi belly’ but team manager Roger McHarg reports that all are up and well now and the tour is progressing nicely.
The Willows won their first game against an MCC XI from England by two wickets with 10 balls to spare … the MCC scored 254/6 declared with the Willows making 255/8.
Tom bowled well and broke a partnership with a direct hit for a run out while Ciaran hit 36 off just 40 balls late in the order, being dismissed with just two runs required.
The match was played in the 60,000 seat PCA Stadium-Mohali, which is a venue for test matches and ODIs in the city.
A second match was completed overnight against the local VPS School at the Chandigarh Sector 16 Stadium with the Willows again successful.
VPS was dismissed for 218 with Tom again bowling well, the Willows reaching 219/4 with Ciaran being unbeaten on 28 as victory was secured.
The team’s next game is on Friday against DAV School.
