Richard McCaw (1994-98) was today elevated to New Zealand sport's most scrutinised role, that of All Black captain.
McCaw has succeeded the retired Tana Umaga and will lead the All Blacks to next year's Rugby World Cup in France.
Head Boy, Head of House, proxime accessit and Best All Round Sportsman in his final year, McCaw is rated the best exponent of loose forward play currently on the international scene.
Hailing from the Hakataramea Valley, which straddles the North Otago/South Canterbury border, McCaw is just the second All Black from the tiny Kurow Rugby Club. The first was the late Phil Gard, who played seven matches for New Zealand in 1971 and '72, including the fourth and final test against the Lions in 1971.
