Eric Murray, Selwyn Cleland, Carl Meyer and Hamish Bond on their way to bronze in Poland |
The influence of master rowing coach Fred Strachan and his charges from Otago Boys' was in evidence again over the weekend with the podium finish for the New Zealand men's coxless four at a World Cup regatta in Poland.
After finishing the least impressive of the New Zealand crews at last year's World Championships in Japan, Rowing New Zealand has placed significant investment into getting the four up to scratch. Into the crew came 2004 Olympian Carl Meyer (1995-99) and rookie Hamish Bond (1999-2003) and their influence was transparently clear.
In a race set at a furious pace, the four powered its way to a highly impressive bronze medal on the waters of Ponzan, tucked in behind world champions Britain and Slovenia. The regatta is part of the buildup to this year's World Championships to be raced in England.
