Sir Archibald McIndoe Bequest Society

* The Foundation will launch its Bequest Society in the next few weeks.

We are delighted and privileged to announce the Society will carry the name of legendary plastic surgeon Sir Archibald McIndoe, who attended Otago Boys 1914-1918. Sir Archibald’s daughter, Mrs Vanora Marland, has graciously given the Foundation permission to use her father’s name and has written a lovely piece for inclusion in ous Society brochure:

Archibald McIndoe is world renowned for his pioneering work in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, following on from his friend and mentor Sir Harold Gillies, another great New Zealander. Sadly, he is little known in the country of his birth and education, even at the Otago Medical School and Dunedin Hospital where he trained and worked.

For this reason, I am especially delighted that his old school should celebrate him in this way. His character is beautifully summed up by Leonard Mosley in his biography: "Archie McIndoe's achievement is not to be measured by his knack of making friends or even by his brilliance as a surgeon, but in the unique quality he possessed of mending lives as well as bodies, of smashing fears and prejudices, of sweeping away bureaucratic cant, of quickening events when they were moving too slowly and of inspiring enthusiasm wherever he went.”

My father was immensely proud of his New Zealand roots and I am delighted that Otago Boys’ High School is proud of him.

Membership of the Sir Archibald McIndoe Society is open to anyone who makes a bequest to the School. The importance of a bequest does not rely on its size.

Strong Foundations have even stronger bequest branches in their fund-raising armoury and the Sir Archibald McIndoe Bequest Society will play a major part in our continued growth and future development of the school.

Further information about making a bequest is available from the Foundation’s office (03/4778977, info@obhsfoundation.co.nz)

Scholarships

* Among the many meaningful ways Old Boys are supporting the Foundation is through the establishment of scholarships – for new entrants to Otago Boys’ and leavers alike.

The Foundation’s Patron Graeme Marsh (1947-51) has introduced a series of scholarships in his name for Year 9 (3rd form) boys coming into Otago Boys’ from Arthur Street School with three boys benefiting each year.

This year’s first recipients are Matthew Wright, Peter Adler and Callum Lambert. The Graeme Marsh Scholarships are valued at $2,000 each.

Also to be introduced this year are at least two other scholarships, both for leavers.

The Superior Minerals Scholarship, through Lawrence Alloo (1981-85), will offer $500 each year to a leaver setting out on an agricultural or horticultural pathway through Lincoln University or other tertiary institution.

And the Clarke Craw Scholarship (Gavin Craw 1961-65) will assist a boy leaving school this year intent on undertaking an accounting degree at university with a view to starting a career in a Chartered Accounting firm upon graduation. Clarke Craw Ltd will ‘service’ this scholarship – worth $8,000 over four years – by way of offering part-time employment and mentoring to the successful candidate during the course of his study.

Applications for both the Superior Minerals and Clarke Craw Scholarships will be called at the beginning of the third term with interviews to be conducted before the end of August. The successful applicants will be announced early in the final term.

Finding our fellow Old Boys

* Thank you to all those who have passed on contact details for Old Boys they know.

This tracking process is a vital part of the Foundation’s work, especially with the school’s 150th celebrations now just six years away.

A check of the Class Lists on the website clearly shows those for whom we have contact and those we don’t. If you know where ‘missing’ Old Boys are, please get that information to the Foundation.

The more we can include on the newsletter list, the better.

Reunions

* Momentum continues towards the hosting of a 50th reunion for the intake of 1957 on 12th and 13th October with further details available from the Foundation office.

* And numbers are building for the reunion of the intakes of 1964 to 1967 on 16th and 17th November. Your contacts there are Ross Graham (rmgraham1@aapt.net.au) and Michael Esdaile (mail@takeme2.net)

Founders Day celebrations

* Magnus Sinclair (1955-59 and a member of staff 1963-2000) will again oversee the annual Founders Day get-together.

This year’s event – for the boys of the 1950s (the intakes from 1950 to 1959, along with their partners) – will be held at the Carey’s Bay Historic Hotel on Sunday 5th August, beginning at 11a.m. Meals and bare service will be available from 12 noon.

Bookings can be made directly with the hotel (03/4728022) with further information available from Magnus himself on 03/4727508.

Did you know?

* Phillip Gibson (1963-67), dux in 1967, is the New Zealand Ambassador to Indonesia, based in Jakarta.

* John Turner (1958-60) is a highly acclaimed in the United Kingdom, based out of Devon. His website address is www.john-turner.co.uk

Congratulations

* The Otago Nuggets may be battling – again – in the National Basketball League but it seems the future is looking a little more encouraging for the home side.

Three Otago reps have been named in the New Zealand under 21 side and 16 year old Otago Boys’ pupil Morgan Nathan is a member of the Junior Tall Blacks, the national under 19 selection.

Already with the dream of playing college basketball in the United States, the 1.95 teenager with size 15 shoes was surprised to have been picked at the end of his first trial.

Morgan came to Otago Boys’ as a Year 9 (3rd form) pupil after living in Queenstown and at the same time as he decided to play basketball instead of rugby, a 10 centimetre growth spurt saw him acquire the ideal body shape for his new sport. In the last two years he has played for the New Zealand under 18 team and the Otago under 16 and 17 selections.

Old Boys’ Society

* A group of more than 40 Old Boys met in Nelson in late-May, with the gathering certain to signal a resurgence in alumni gatherings in the region.

Organised by John Billcliff (1959-60 and a long-serving Master), Foundation Trustee member Gary Williams (1966-71, Head Boy in 1971) and Lyel Stewart (1965-70), the gathering was staged in the Stoke Bowling Club, of which Peter Rutherford (1953-57) is the President.

Included in the assembly were 1950 Auckland Empire Games six mile gold medalist and three mile silver medalist Harold Nelson (1936-39), former Central Districts’ cricketer Andrew Schwass (1988-91), the Foundation’s latest Friend from the region Colin Russell (1958-61) and Nelson mayoral candidate at this October’s local body elections, Ian Barker (1958-61).
