August newsletter –
Reunions
* The 7th form of 1989 will be gathering in Dunedin on April 3rd & 4th 2009 to celebrate the 20th anniversary of their passing out.
A full programme has been organised, comprising a Friday night ‘meet and greet’; touch rugby, golf and football on the Saturday afternoon; and a formal dinner on the Saturday night.
For further details regarding timing and costs, please contact Adam Walker – reunion.adam@gmail.com
* And a reminder of the 50th Reunion of the 1958 intake – to be held in Dunedin from 12th to 14th September.
Those who haven’t yet registered but who are planning to attend should make contact with Bob McKillop (04/3849800 or rmmck@xtra.co.nz).
Website Business Directory
* New to the Foundation’s Business Directory this month are the Brothers Boutique Hotel, 295 Rattray Street, Dunedin; Hawkdun Lodge in Ranfurly; Your Business Team in Dunedin and SBS, also in Dunedin.
We welcome our new advertisers and acknowledge their support, and we encourage our Old Boys and all Foundation connections to utilise their products and services as the need arises.
The number of visits to the website grows monthly with more pages viewed and a greater time spent linking to the pages on offer. The Foundation, in time, plans to offer a ‘one stop shop’ social network service – with the website including links to (almost) everything you need or any contact you require.
Those interested in advertising on the Business Directory are invited to make contact with the Foundation office (03/4778977, 027/4370335, info@obhsfoundation.co.nz). Current rates stand at $200 for six months or $300 for a 12-month contract.
Tracking Old Boys
* Thank you to all who have come forward with contact details for ‘lost’ Old Boys in recent weeks. This is greatly appreciated.
Our tracking man – Lawrie Currie (1957-62) – has produced a list of ‘potential’ Old Boys living in the lower half of the South Island for whom he has no telephone numbers. Their addresses have been found in the most recent Electoral Rolls.
Any help with finding these fellows would be welcome. Lawrie’s contact details are: 03/5475226 or lawrie-denise@xtra.co.nz

Otago Boys’ 2008 Olympians
* Otago Boys’ High School is well represented at the 2008 Summer Olympic Games in Beijing, with three sportsmen involved and all very much in line to stand on the podium.
In action early are the men’s rowing four with Hamish Bond (1999-2003) and Carl Meyer (1995-1999) forming 50 percent part of the world champion crew.
The four had a magnificent 2007 season, winning seven out of eight major races including the world title event in Munich. The New Zealanders (Eric Murray and James Dallinger are the other crew members) also broke the British four’s sequence of 29 straight victories.
Hamish was Head Boy in 2003 and has interrupted his university studies to row fulltime, while Carl is a qualified engineer, completing his degree with honours. Carl rowed at the 2004 Olympics in Athens while this will be the first Olympics for Hamish.
The four qualified for the semi-finals during the weekend’s heats with the race for the last six to feature in the final scheduled for viewing on TV One at 8.50p.m. tomorrow (Wednesday) night. The final will be shown at 9.30p.m. on Saturday night.
Greg Henderson (1990-94), the school’s other representative in Beijing, is now one of this country’s most celebrated cyclists.
Greg will be competing in his fourth Olympic Games, having also been to three Commonwealth Games and a number of world championships.
He was the 2004 UCI scratch race world champion and won the points race gold medal at the 2006 Melbourne Commonwealth Games. Greg, in combination with Hayden Roulston, took silver in the Madison event at the 2003 world championships, has finished first in no fewer than eight World Cup events and also has three Commonwealth Games’ bronze medals to his name. He is also a very fine road cyclist with an involvement in the Tour de France almost certain over the next year or two.
Greg finished fourth in the points race at the Athens Olympics and fifth in the same event at the 2008 world championships in March.
He’ll be contesting two events in Beijing.
The 40 kilometre points race will be screened on Television New Zealand at 9.40p.m. on Saturday, August 16th with the Madison, again in combination with Roulston, featuring at 9.30p.m. on Tuesday August 19th.

Old Boys in the news
* Nick Bishop (1996-2000) finds himself in perhaps the construction capital of the world – Dubai – and is thoroughly enjoying the experience.
Nick has taken the time to pen a short letter to the Foundation, which we are delighted to reproduce here:
After completing my Bachelor of Architecture degree at Victoria University of Wellington (2005) and spending two and a half years back working in the homeland, it was time to look abroad. After doing some research as to my options overseas and with my field of interest it was not hard to decide on where to go. Dubai.
Before leaving I was introduced to a company called Weber Consulting based out of Queenstown. Weber is a New Zealand firm and had plans to set an office in Dubai. Weber does work for a development company called Slant.
You can see more through –
www.slant.co.nz, www.weberconsulting.co.nz, www.jaggededge.co.nz
Weber and Slant have an impressive portfolio of work and an exciting vision, so this was an opportunity I couldn’t turn down.
I’ve been in Dubai now and it’s certainly been an adventure.
Dubai is a very interesting place and it’s mind-boggling to see the extent of construction here. The two main differences I've noticed between Dubai and Dunedin has been the heat and the pace of life – over 40 degree heat during the day and with eight lane highways grid locked with traffic, they are the total extremes. It has taken a bit to get used to the different culture here and you really need exercise good patience.
So far it definitely has been a move worthwhile. The Weber Dubai office is well and truly kicking and things are going well. It's an exciting place to be, there is always something interesting happening which makes for an experience every day. Feel free in get in contact if you are thinking about heading this way or are interested in hearing more. I will be more than happy to help.

* Two Old Boys were honoured for their service to the accounting profession at a recent Institute of Accountants function in Dunedin.
A founding partner of Polson Higgs – Les Stewart (1947-51) – was presented with his 50-year membership certificate while Jim Valentine (1935) was presented with his 60-year membership certificate.
There was a nice touch to the evening with this year celebrating the Institute’s centennial. The first president in 1908 was another Old Boy, Peter Barr (1875-77), who was both prominent in accounting circles and as a member of several visionary government commissions.
Cats
* The Otago Boys Parents’ Association has been given the opportunity to sell tickets to the ‘Cats’ Gala opening night at Dunedin’s Regent Theatre on 4th September.
Tickets are for the opening night only and at $42 a head represent a saving of $17.
Cats is the iconic award-winning musical composed by Andrew Lloyd Webber, with the lyrics based on T.S. Eliot’s poems, Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats.
The show, staged by Dunedin Operatic in association with More FM, will be directed by Stephen Robertson (Les Miserables, 42nd Street, Chicago) and features a talented cast of 45 with a new set and costumes.
If you would like to take up this rare offer, please contact Judy Toomer, Parents’ Association secretary at – (work) 03/4770032, (home) 03/4894710 or jtoomer@xtra.co.nz
Tickets must be booked and paid for by Thursday 21st August.
